Fishing for panfish I primarily use small 1/64th 1/32nd hair or feather jigs (pref for the 1/64th} Will fish them just "nekkid" (toss the jig an bounce along the bottom) on occasion, but for most part, like to put them under a small slip bobber set up: Stop/Bead/bobber/1/32oz worm weight/swivel/24inch tag line/jig This allows me to get better shore casting distance, more accurate, especially in wind, change depths to find suspended fish, fish into cover much more effectively, and popping the bobber gives great action-- and as you can cover more water effectively, they are great for locating fish, so if you want to find them, then sit on them with worms or minners or crickets or whatever, they work good for that. I rarely tip them with anything, though a bit of night crawler or wax worm could work I have found the little jigs to be consistent producers in all kinds of situations, and since I fish with grandkids that get bored, and you can cover more water and stay 'busy" with them as opposed to dunking a worm or bait an letting it float. Though once you use the jigs to find the fish, you might want to switch over to the "worm and bobber" method to keep the kids occupied Far as I am concerned, crappie and 'gills are as good a table fare as it gets, and for kids, good sized, scrappy gills are the way to go to introduce them to fishing Tim

Great post Tim, I cut my teeth on the old red head, white hair Dollfly. Believe me I know how effective jigs can be. A good maribou, feather, or hair jig is dynomite for gills, crappie, perch and bass.
There is one rubber body I like particularly well too. Bass Assasin makes a small 1" shad body that fits nicely on a 1/16 jig. The chartruese/pepper will take fish when nothing else in the box will. It's my 'go to' for Crappie.
