Folks The biggest cat I've ever caught was less than ten pounds. Most likely 3 or 4. I'm looking at the photos and reading the posts, you guys are bringing in giant cats. What kind of gear are you using? I'm thinking I need to use my saltwater gear! How do they fight? always head up or down stream? Sideways? Dig for the bottom? Fins, scales, sharp things to worry about when laning them? Thanks in advance for any infomation!

Well, that's one thing that this group is good for.... Information , may it be good or bad.
Your fishing depends on your Style,Location and Bait used. The old saying: Bigger the Bait, The Bigger the Fish, don't always work out.. I've caught some of my biggest on my smallest tackle, and then again I've caught some of my smallest fish on my biggest tackle. Personally I use a combination of tackle.. I carry both, my light tackle has 20 to 30 lb line and my heavy tackle can go up to 125 lb. I prefer Penn Reels (209 and 309) for my heavy stuff.. and Garcia 4000 up to 6500 for my light tackle... Now this tackle is for my Catfishing... I do have smaller stuff for bass, crappie and 'gills. Places to fish.... Any wheres there's good water. Rivers, streams, creeks and lakes. Myself I fish the Ohio , Saline, Wabash and Trade Water Rivers in my area....(For Catfishing)... My bass and crappie fishing I stay with the smaller lakes and ponds. Sometimes Trade Water and the Saline Rivers can be good for this. My baits will range from an 8 inch shad or skip jack.. live or for cut bait...To the smallest jig I can find for crappie,'gills and bass. I fish from the bank, my 12 foot jon boat to my 20 foot G3... And trust me.....Them Big'uns aren't out there every time you go fishin'. I reckon after it's all said and done... It depends on you and how big you wanna git
Good luck !!

The Garcia 4000 and the 6500 those are bait casting reels, if I remember correctly, arn't they? Do you ever use Spining reels for the bigger cats? Will they hold up? I don't think we have cats that big in NJ

I have a Penn 850 Spinning reel with 80 lb braid line on it but I've never caught any thing big on it yet...Just bought it last year. I use Garcia Spin casting reels for bass and 'gill and I have my lighter stuff for crappie which are Pflugger spin casting and Shakespear spinning reels. (Light tackle) I don't know how far it would be for you but, some of the best big cats in your area come from the Potomacwww.youtube.com/watch?v=RHoTw2SwNKs
